# Split shipments

A customer orders a stocked candle and a made-to-order side table in the same cart. Left alone, Shopify holds both until the table is finished. The candle waits for something it has nothing to do with.

Orderkraft's fulfillment constraint splits that order at the source. Stocked items release for fulfillment immediately. Made-to-order and customised items stay held until their manufacturing order actually completes.

It reads the same production locations and manufacturing order status as everything else in Orderkraft, so there's no separate rule engine to configure and no risk of it drifting out of sync with what production actually says is done.

The same mechanism keeps unfinished made-to-order items out of your warehouse or 3PL entirely until they're ready, useful if your WMS shouldn't see an order before there's actually something to pick.

## Questions

**What happens without this turned on?**
Shopify holds the entire order until every line item can ship, so a single made-to-order item delays the in-stock items sitting right next to it in the same cart.

**Does this need a 3PL or WMS integration?**
No. It's a Shopify fulfillment constraint tied to your production locations, and it works with whatever fulfillment setup you already have.

**Can I hold made-to-order items out of my warehouse system entirely until they're produced?**
Yes. That's the same mechanism, applied to keep unfinished items from ever reaching a workflow built for things that are already done.
